The Coinweb Monthly Spin - Eleventh Edition

Coinweb Project's Monthly Round-Up and Curated News & Events From The Bleeding Edge of All Things Web3

Hello Coinwebbers! This month we have had our Alpha Wallet Tester programme in full swing, with lots of bug squashin’ and error hunting that has helped our core developer team make significant improvements on our way to the full release of our Coinweb Wallet. We are getting so close, and can’t wait to ship it for all of our users to try! Also during this month, Coinweb held a national e-sports tournament in Indonesia during Coinfest Week 2023, with 128 teams playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang to compete for a juicy prize pool and bragging rights for at least a year. You can catch all the action in the events section below!

As for the world of web3, we were treated to yet another rollercoaster ride-of-a-lifetime as the colour of the industry never pales a shade of grey. Coinbase’s BASE Layer 2 rollup rose through the ranks to surpass the likes of Arbitrum and Optimism, as Friend.tech’s overhyped launch netted over $1.7 million (rivaling the Ethereum network itself) in fees earned during its first week of operations. Sam Altman’s WorldCoin launch came with record-breaking enrollment rates in countries around the world, seeking to create a universal basic income (UBI) platform that records Iris biometric data – and not without controversy, as regulatory authorities in countries such as France and Kenya have flagged concerns in data management and security.

Industry leading exchange Binance has faced a wide swath of challenges in jurisdictions around the world, ranging from regulatory enforcement actions to losses of major partnerships such as Mastercard. Headcounts have continued to dwindle throughout the sector as early-stage investing activities have reduced and raising capital has become extremely competitive. However, the SEC has scored a number of losses in court this month including the Greyscale and Ripple cases; and whilst Bitcoin and Ethereum were judicially declared to be commodities, US approval of the spot Bitcoin ETF has been delayed yet again. Meanwhile, institutions piled in to apply for spot Ethereum ETF approvals, and Europe and Hong Kong have taken the lead after approving their respective ETFs and commencing regulated trading in their markets. Lastly, government and international central banks have continued their push and trials for CBDCs despite the outspoken opposition to their use – like, we know you guys can do it already… whether you can force us to use them is separate question altogether.
